Pore water exchange?driven inorganic carbon export from intertidal salt marshes

چکیده

Respiration in intertidal salt marshes generates dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) that is exported to the coastal ocean by tidal exchange with marsh platform. Understanding link between physical drivers of water and chemical flux a key constraining wetland contributions regional budgets. The spatial temporal (seasonal, annual) variability pore DIC export was assessed from microtidal (Sage Lot Pond, Massachusetts). Spatial constrained 224Ra : 228Th disequilibria across two hydrologic units within sediments. Seventy years of continuous encroachment substantially increases 'blue carbon' capacity as mangroves replace intertidal salt marshes.

Shifts in ecosystem structure have been observed over recent decades as woody plants encroach upon grasslands and wetlands globally. The migration of mangrove forests into salt marsh ecosystems is one such shift which could have important implications for global 'blue carbon' stocks. To date, attempts to quantify changes in ecosystem function are essentially constrained to climate-mediated puls...

Tide-driven deep pore-water flow in intertidal sand flats

Sulfidic seeps with methane ebullition were observed at the low-water line of intertidal sand flats at a number of locations in the Wadden Sea. Bioturbating fauna was absent in the seep areas but abundant in the more central areas of the tidal flat. At one site, the vertical methane and sulfate distribution in pore water was determined along transects from the low-water line toward the interior...

Loss of ‘Blue Carbon’ from Coastal Salt Marshes Following Habitat Disturbance

Increased recognition of the global importance of salt marshes as 'blue carbon' (C) sinks has led to concern that salt marshes could release large amounts of stored C into the atmosphere (as CO2) if they continue undergoing disturbance, thereby accelerating climate change. Empirical evidence of C release following salt marsh habitat loss due to disturbance is rare, yet such information is essen...
